An eleventh-hour translation

Background

The client is a world-leading listed biopharmaceuticals company that operates in 170 countries with 28,000 employees and 21 research and production facilities. It is primarily focused on a number of particularly critical therapeutic areas: hepatitis C, immunology, oncology, neuroscience and women’s health. It is also present in Italy with a research and production centre that employs 1300 people and exports to over 110 countries.

The Challenge

The client contacts Landoor’s Project Management office at 5.30 on a Friday afternoon with an extremely urgent request: the translation from Italian to English of over 250,000 words in a week. The translation consists of two highly technical documents for internal use and presents us with two challenges because, in addition to the urgent deadline, the texts are a mix of English and Italian and this requires us to come up with the best way of managing both the translation and layout steps.

The Solution

In order to start translating the documents as quickly as possible, we need to analyse the files straight away, put together a quote and select our team of translators. These are three preliminary phases common to every translation project but, in this case, they must be carried out very quickly and very accurately: just over an hour later the documents have been analysed, the quote written and the translators pre-assigned. At 8 p.m. on the Friday the client gives us the green light to proceed. In the meantime, the Project Manager in charge has assessed the possible technical and management options for best dealing with the issues of the mix of languages in the documents and terminological consistency among the team of translators so that, when the green light arrives from the client, the process and the workflow are already defined and, in the late evening, work can begin on the translation.

The Result

The client receives the perfectly executed translation punctually the following Friday, as they had requested, enabling them to respect their deadlines downstream from the workflow and successfully overcome a particularly critical phase.
